Businesses You Should Know: Josh Walker
I love the slide of a steel guitar
I love the moan of an old blues harp
I love the shake of a tamborine
I love the bass when it’s low and mean

As a service to the community, I am going to write about a different local business or business person each week. My goal is to highlight the unique differences of each business and what sets them apart from others in the same industry.
Drum roll please… This week’s spotlight is on Josh Walker.
OK… I’ll admit it. I grew up listening to country music and still enjoy it to this day. I like the music itself because of the way it makes me feel. I still cannot pick out a blues harp in the music, mostly because I do not know what that is.
Josh Walker, a skilled Northwest Indiana music producer, not only knows what it is, but can pick it out of a song with multiple other instruments playing. He says it’s a skill his father taught him at a young age and that he has refined in his career as a freelance recording engineer.
Now that Josh has set up his recording studio in Northwest Indiana, I would expect to see more bands and individuals using Josh as their audio consultant. While there are many good singers and groups in the Northwest Indiana area, many don’t understand the subtleties that a good mix of instruments can bring to the whole project. In fact, to my untrained ear, some of the local garage bands have a sound similar to a truckload of pigs running into a truckload of empty tin cans.
In some cases, it’s the music itself that makes you feel good, while other times, it’s the lyrics that you appreciate. Next time you listen to your favorite song, try to completely block out the singer(s) and just listen to the instruments. Try to pick each out individually. Do you think it helps or hurts the entire project? How does it make you feel? Would you still listen to it without the lyrics? If you are listening to a commercial production of this song, chances are an audio engineer like Josh asked all these questions and more while the track was being recorded.
If you or someone you know needs a music producer in Northwest Indiana, I would recommend Josh. In fact, even if you don’t, I would recommend checking out his blog for some interesting reading. It can be found at www.deconstructiontheory.com.
There’s bound to be rough waters
And I know I’ll take some falls
But with the good Lord as my captain
I can make it through them all…yes

In this case, it’s the lyrics that affect me!

Scott you and Nate are going to have to argue this whole country music v. blues thing out all the way. Maybe you should have Josh there and really work through the science behind the sound engineering.
On a serious note, I’m glad to have met Josh and know a solid audio engineer in the region.
Scott,
I am in no danger of needing a music producer for myself (have you heard me sing?!?) but will keep Josh in mind for other musician friends. I just met Josh recently and am impressed by his many talents.
Nice post.

Hey, thanks for the nice words, guys. I’ve had a great time meeting some new people, and am looking forward to getting meeting more. Life is all about relationships after all, is it not?
Thanks for the article, Scott. I appreciate it.
I am with Kathy, maybe we can start an off key band! But wait, we already have the truck load of pigs crashing into a truck load of tin cans. (Kathy- did they SEE US?)
Great article. Josh has to have good ears to pick those instruments out one by one. Talent!
Steve: Not sure there is much debate with Nate. He’s been listening to a lot of Dixie Chicks lately.
Kathy, Josh, & Evelyn: Thanks! I don’t mind giving credit to those who have talents that I do not.
